I am not alone! Research Methods in Education

Over the weekend I was feeling a little lost as I previously mentioned. For the Research Methods in Education unit I get to pick a title and complete my own study. Most people do this just before their dissertation. I am not most people.

There are 2 areas that I am really interested, inquisitive, passionate about. If you follow me on Twitter or actually know me you will be aware of my love of sketchnotes. Having recently presented for sketcnhote hangout (huge honour) on the topic of sketchnotes in education. I used this as a chance to look a little deeper into brain research and was really excited to find lots of evidence to encourage the use of sketchnotes in education.

The second potential area of interest for me is Professional Development. I've experienced a variety of models in my time as a teacher. Some experiences of PD have left me inspired and excited to try something new in my classroom in order to effectively improve the teaching and learning experience for my students. Other times I have been left drained and on occasion irritable. I read a blog post last year that discussed the issue of PD in schools and how for some unknown reason most events for teachers completely ignore/forget good teaching practice strategies and methods. Often this means we are in our seats for hours being presented to.

I decided to email my tutor with some potential questions and was amazed to receive a really nice response within 24 hours suggesting that we talk soon via Skype. I am not alone! My tutor cares! Hurray!

At the moment my potential questions are as follows:

How effective is professional development in schools for improving the quality of teaching and learning?

To what extent do traditional professional development models engage and inspire teachers?

To what extent do traditional professional development models effect classroom practice?

How do teachers perceive professional development in their schools and how do they interpret this as having an effect on their own practice?

I need to decide on the final form of my questions, my methodologies and then read, research, write and refine. Hopefully I am now getting somewhere.
