Neighbourhood Centre Annual Food Festival

I planned this post nearly a fortnight ago and then missed writing and posting it as I indulged in a really good book that there was absolutely no possible way I could put it down prior to the conclusion. Today I am feeling the guilt for being so tardy in posting and so the night before the Moon Festival weekend starts with my bag packed for an adventure here I am typing.

Last year we accidentally stumbled across a food festival at our neighbourhood centre. We went with a friend who was a meat eater and had lived in Asia long enough to be suitably tempted by the barbecued squid on sticks but not the unidentified meaty items also being roasted. The highlight for my vegetarian self was the most amazing Portugese egg custard tarts fresh out of the oven. With how amazing egg custard tarts are in China you'd think they were created here.

This year we were fairly excited to head back to the festival as the weather was about 5 degrees lower than last year and we wanted those tarts. We'd noticed the hive of activity at the local centre; plastic chairs and tables being set out, lights being erected, stalls being built and heaps of foot traffic. I was really excited to go to the food fair, mainly for the egg custards. Sadly there were no egg custards in sight. I was devastated.

There was some form of competition that may have been televised on the stage and plenty of families having dinner and buying tacky trinkets. It is fun to people watch at local events and the locals certainly love to watch us. The stall vendors were desperate to sell to us and frequently used 1 of the few Mandarin words that I understand which means 'delicious'. We did try some chesnuts however they didn't quite live up to the description so I went to the supermarket for a yoghurt instead. Being vegetarian in China is not as easy as you'd think.
