I believe this is now the third time that I am referencing Mary Poppins. A bit of a surprise really as I had no idea that she had had quite such an impact on my life, but it would appear that owning the video has done something for me.
Spring has sprung and apparently this means that you need to fly kites in Suzhou. I was in Shanghai today and didn't see any, but I wasn't in any of the parks so this could be a nationwide phenomenon. Across from my apartment in Suzhou there is a grassy area and suddenly as Spring arrived people appeared on the weekend pitching tents and flying kites. They never stay over night in the tents. I'm not even sure how they use them in the day. The number of tents seen could explain why Decathlon sell them and so many people feel the need to test them out in the shop though. People of all ages fly kites. Some are excessively cheap and were purchased from roadside vendors, but some look rather expensive. The kites come in all shapes and sizes, but it would appear that the larger triangular kites are favoured, especially if they have an angry bird on them.
Yesterday a kite flew down amongst the traffic and nearly landed on a car windscreen. Thankfully no accident occurred but it must having been flying really high to be able to reach the traffic. I don't think anyone was doing any stunts and I don't know if Spring means wind and breezes here, but people are all out and flying kites. One thing I love is the fact that people aren't sat at home on their sofas watching movies and or playing video games. Mary would be proud.
