My husband and I have been living in China for 6 months now. Despite the fact that we live in a city with a number of other expats we are still a novelty. We were warned that we would be stared at, but we didn't think it would be quite so much! On the street, on the bus, in the mall, in a restaurant, the train, the airport, you name it and we are the main attraction.
In Xi'an and Yangshuo a large number of Chinese tourists would try and strategically places themselves in front of us to take a photograph. I am apparently really good at not noticing this and moving at the last minute. We have posed with people who have asked, however this has led to us having to pose for around 5 - 10 photographs with a variety of other people. Why am I so bad at saying "no" and where are all of those photos of me going?!
One day I returned from work and my husband told me that as he had been walking Bella our Labradoodle in the park he was asked by a family if they could have their photo taken with her. This was a nice surprise as some Chinese people are petrified of dogs. Following Bella's photo shoot with the family they then put their baby in Adam's arms so that they could take a photo of their baby being held by a foreigner.
When you look at all of the advertising in and around China nearly every model used is "white". Is it any wonder that we are so mesmerising if every billboard, magazine and other advertisement features someone "white". Despite not being quite as glamorous or skinny as the models we still attract attention. Funnily while in Japan we noticed that we were not stared at in the slightest. Even though we saw less foreigners we were never stared at. We came home and we were only in the airport for a matter of minutes and we were being blatantly stared at. My conclusion is that we must be exceptionally beautiful in China.
